Digital Citizenship Lesson Ideas
At the beginning of every year the teachers and students spend time talking about RESPECT. The ACS Hillingdon school rule is RESPECT, respect for self, others, property and the environment. Respect is the core of the Acceptable Use Agreement (AUA) and it is shared with all parents and students from 3rd grade up. The following resources are designed as a flexible guide with each group taking the discussions in various directions. Initial discussions are about living in the 'real' world  and then look at the on-line world. Please let me know if you find any great resources that I can add to my list.
“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.”  Theodore Roosevelt
“Wrong is wrong even if everyone is doing it.  Right is right even if no-one is doing it.” William Penn
T - Is it true? H - Is it helpful? I - Is it inspiring? N - Is it necessary? K - Is it kind?
Lesson One
RESPECT for self, others, property and environment - How can the class work together?
  • be honest
  • share
  • be helpful
  • collaborate / work together
  • be organised
  • be responsible
  • show RESPECT
Golden Rule - Some form of the Golden Rule exists in almost every culture.
  • If we live according to the guidance of reason, we shall desire for others the good which we seek for ourselves. – Baruch Spinoza
  • Help thy brother's boat across and lo! Thine own has reached the shore. – Hindu Proverb
  • Judaism: What is hateful to you, do not do to your fellow man. That is the entire law; all the rest is commentary. – The Talmud, Shabbat 31
  • Christianity: Do to others as you would have them do to you. – Luke 6:31
  • Islam: None of you has faith unless he loves for his brother what he loves for himself. – Hadith (Bukhari) 2:6
  • Buddhism: Hurt not others in ways that you yourself would find hurtful. – Udana Varga
  • Hinduism: This is the sum of duty: Do naught unto others which would cause pain if done to you. – The Mahabharata
  • Confucianism: "Is there one word that will keep us on the path to the end of our days?" "Yes, Reciprocity. What you do not wish yourself, do not unto others." – The Analects
Lesson Two
Everyone has come from somewhere different; different families, different cultures, different languages and different countries but we are ALL Citizens of the World and have responsibilities to all the communities we belong to.
Discuss and define RESPONSIBILITY and COMMUNITY.
  1. Responsibility for Self - examples?
  2. Responsibility for Others - examples?
  3. Responsibility for Property - examples?
  4. Responsibility for Environment - examples?
In two’s, create a presentation with a slide for each responsibility and give at least three examples (Keynote, Pages, Explain Everything, Doceri etc.) Title slide should contain Title, names and photo of groups. Both of you need to have a copy of the finished presentation.

Lesson Three
As well as being citizens of the world, we are also citizens of the Digital World.
What does the Digital World mean to you? Class Discussion
  • Respect for Self -
  • Respect for Others -
  • Respect for Property -
  • Respect for Environment -
Duplicate the slides in your presentation and change the title page to ‘Citizen of the Digital World.’ Add your own picture and put examples on each page - if you need help ask your friends.

Digital World - additional lessons
  • Respect for Self and Others - talking safely online, picture perfect - taking and using images, power of words
  • Respect for Property - how to look after personal technology - including when to use
  • Respect for Environment - printing, charging etc.
  • Respect for Security - private and personal information, strong passwords
  • Respect for Fair Use - how to cite a resource, whose is it anyway?
